This beer pours out a very dark brown, with no head and no lacing.
The nose is bourbon, rich malt, dried dark fruits, oak, nuts, and booze. The palate is very similar, with bourbon, malt, raisins, plums, caramel, walnut, vanilla, brown sugar, and oak. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, with very light carbonation, and a sweet finish.
This is a very good barley wine, that I have found benefits from aging. When fresh, the esters, booziness, and oak notes can overpower the barley. I feel like the bottle-conditioned version provides a more unadulterated version of the beer.
I have to say I’m a little disappointing they suggest enjoying it chilled. This beer should be served around 8-12C. In fact, I ran mine under hot water to get it to temperature, as my apartment is so cold!
It’s nice to see a full Central City beer in this pack, rather then the more commercial Red Racer. I’m surprised to see this appear so early, as I thought this would be the last beer. Now I’m as to curious abut what they have lined up for the the last few days!
