Beer Review: Colour & Shape from Superflux

20170123_103715.jpgSuperflux Beer Company is one on BC craft beer’s best kept secrets. Formally known as Machine Ales and operating out of the Callister Brewing craft beer incubator in East Vancouver, after their one year term their was over, they renamed themselves Superflux and became gypsy brewers (currently they are brewing on contract at Dogwood Brewery).

The don’t have a website, they aren’t on Facebook or Twitter, and they sell their product in a nondescript plain metal can. From a sales and marketing standpoint, they are doing everything wrong, and yet it seems to sell out almost instantly at every store that manages to get stock of it. Ask anyone who has tried their beer and they will just rave about it! I even have a friend who is shipping it down to  people in the U.S. Word of mouth goes a long way!

So what is all the fuss about? Let’s find out

  • Style: East Coast IPA
  • Format: 4pk of 355ml cans
  • Stats: 6.8% ABV; unlisted IBU (perceived bitterness ~15)
  • Cost: $12.5–20 (depends where you shop)

Tasting notes:

This beer pours out a cloudy pale orange colour, with a finger of relatively dense head that dissipates within a few minutes, but leaves some gentle lacing.

The nose is packed with citrus fruit, with hints of orange, mango, grapefruit, and pineapple. On the palate, it’s like drinking a glass of tropical fruit juice, with a touch of resin and caramel malt to offset said. The mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied and smooth with a slightly sweet finish that offsets any hop bitterness.

All I can say about this beer is holy shit! That is just mind-blowingly juicy and fresh. East Coast style IPAs have been growing in popularity in BC over the last year, as people grow tired of the IBU pissing contest that we’ve seen with IPAs over the last few years. A great example is the Steamworks Flagship IPA, which won best-in-show at this year’s BC Beer awards. While I loved that beer, this is on another level entirely. It is even a little better than Twin Sails’ Juice Plus, which is really saying something.

If you see this on a shelf somewhere, don’t hesitate to grab it, then send some to me!

Rating: 4.75/5

Update, oh hey! They are on Instagram.

  1. I don’t know about you but it wasn’t the IBU pissing contest at all for me. It was the fact that every brewry in BC basically ad one unchanging IPA in their lineup. I’m sick of drinking the same beer all the time. We want change and while every other style was changing and morphing IPA just stayed stagnant. I mean if we had a Elysian style brewery with a ton of IPA’s on tap I bet the malaise would never have started.
