Last week saw launch parties for the newly rebranded VI Brewing in both Victoria and Vancouver. Along with the already released 48 Dark Lager (previously Hermann’s), Pipers Pale Ale, and Carmanah (previously Sea Dog), four other beers were available at the event: Sombrio Citrus Session, Juan de Fuca Cerveza, The Victoria Lager, and a new version of the 19 IPA.
All of the beers are on the lighter side, with ABVs of 4.8% or lower. I’m not normally a lager guy, but found the Victoria Lager was the best beer on offer, as it had tons of biscuit malt character. I was a little sad to see they took the 19 IPA and made it into an ISA—it still had some good citrus and piney hop notes, but 4.8% does not an IPA make.

Following a successful (re)launch in both Victoria and Vancouver, Vancouver Island Brewing (VI Brewing) is ready to showcase its incredible new lineup to the public. The unveiling saw a twist on three of their classic beers as well as a preview of four exclusive new ones.
This new stellar beer lineup consists of a Citrus Session, an IPA, a Mexican-style Cerveza and a Lager.
Sombrio Citrus Session
A beer with noticeable hop content, and tons of bright flavour thanks to the proprietary blend of citrus zests added to each batch. The tastes of lemon, lime, and tangerine dominate this highly seasonable ale.
A full-flavored beer with a silky malt backbone and a bright hop profile of tropical fruit, and citrus – it packs all the taste of an IPA with much more friendly alcohol content.
Juan De Fuca Cerveza
Unlike it’s import competitors this beer has complexity coming from premium grain, malt and hop varieties.
The Victoria Lager
This pale golden lager exhibits a classic clean character with notes of biscuity malts. Bitterness is akin to a German Pilsner with an aromatic aroma. Mouthfeel is firm and even, with an overall dry tone.
The Victoria Lager is currently available on draught at the brewery, and will be hitting the market in the next few months.
The rest of the portfolio of beers is now available across B.C. in both government and private liquor stores as well as in finer on premise establishments. Limited supply will also be available in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
