A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to attend the 2017 BC Beer Awards. It’s taken me a while to get around to writing about the experience, because my girlfriend and I flew to Portland the next day for an amazing beercation. 🙂
The event was held at the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver on October 21, with 65 BC breweries pouring samples, along with several BC craft cideries.
This was the first time I’ve attended the awards, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I got a VIP ticket, which allowed me entry an hour earlier than the general public to watch the main award ceremony. Rather than a stuffy sit-down ceremony, the awards were presented in a fun and loose fashion, with beer being poured the whole time.
Awards were presented in 30 different categories this year and the judges made some excellent choices. I was particularly happy to see Mount Arrowsmith Brewing winning Brewery of the Year, Boombox winning in the Specialty IPA category (not to mention people’s choice), and Twin Sails winning every position in the Imperial IPA category (along with Innovator of the Year and several other awards)! Check out the full list of awards here.
Once the ceremony is itself was over the festivities truly began and the beer flowed in earnest. What set this festival apart from regular beer fests is that everyone attending was either a beer nerd, or worked for a brewery. As a result, people there really appreciated the great selection of beers on offer and no one was there just to get rowdy.
Unfortunately I had to leave early, as both my girlfriend and I traveled over from Victoria early that morning and had a flight to Portland to catch the next morning, but both of us agreed that it was an amazing night and are definitely planning to attend next year!
