Last Week’s Craft Beer Tasting Notes—Jan 1–7

What a week! I drank so many amazing beers at The Drake’s Wild & Sour day, along with tons of fantastic beers at home. Keeping the party going into the New Year! 😉

The Drake’s Wild & Sour event

Gueuze Tilquin – Draft Version by Gueuzerie Tilquin

Tart, sour, and funky with notes yes of lemongrass, citrus, apple, pear, straw, and horseblanket. Really dry finish.

The Dissident (2016) by Deschutes Brewery

Sour with notes of tart cherries, bready malt, red wine, oak, and a touch of funk.

Blueberry by Cascade Brewing Company (USA)

Tart blueberry and bready malt with a slight touch of funk and oak. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

Apricot Provincial by Funkwerks

Light bodied and tart with notes of apricot and lemon followed by a dry finish.

Pineapple Provincial by Funkwerks

Light bodied and tart with notes of pineapple and lemon followed by a dry finish.

The Wanderer (2017) by Bruery Terreux

Sour and tart with notes of blackberries, cherries, leather, tannin, and oak.

Hoppy Sour: Mosaic by Almanac Beer Company

Tropical fruit, citrus, berries, and pine from the hops. Puckering acidity with vinous notes, oak, and a touch of funk.

Farmer’s Reserve Pluot by Almanac Beer Company

Moderate tartness with notes of plum, oak, wine, funk, and tannin.

Lonely Tarts Club by Moylan’s Brewery

Moderately tart with light notes of sweet and sour cherries and a touch of Belgian yeast spice.

Frucht: Lemon & Cherry by Bruery Terreux

Zesty and tart with notes of lemon, cherry, grainy malt, and earthy oak. Nice dry finish.

Tangerine Dream NW by Cascade Brewing Company

Amazing puckering sour with notes of tangerine, rum, apricot, and oak.

Strawberry Ballyhoo Sour Blend by Breakside Brewery

Moderately tart with light notes of strawberry and oak. Grainy body with a dry finish.

Barrel Aged Offleash Peach Sour by Yellow Dog Brewing Co

Pretty nice but I found the oakiness overpowered the mild peach flavours a bit.

Transatlantique Kriek (Lips of Faith) (2017) by New Belgium Brewing Company

Sour and tart with notes of cherry, cranberry, grainy malt, and oak.

Calabaza Blanca by Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales

Tart and grainy with notes of orange peel and coriander, with a dry finish.

Contradiction Sour by Powell Brewery

An interesting mix of mild roasted malt notes, tropical and tamarind notes from the hops, and a touch of tartness from the lactic acid.

Wayfaring Saison by Upright Brewing Company

A nicely rounded saison with some citrussy esters, pepper-like phenols, and a mild touch of funk and oak.

La Vida Improvisacion by Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales

This one tasted like Band-Aids and cheese. Dry and bitter.

Bottle & Cans

Tactical Nuclear Penguin by BrewDog

This 37.5% ABV stout had roasted malt with dark coffee, burned toffee, thick molasses, liquorice, dark fruit, brandy, oak, and booze. Intense!

Beer Geek Vanilla Shake by Mikkeller

Rich, creamy, and full bodied with notes of espresso and well balanced vanilla. Not too bitter, not too sweet. Just right!

Entropy Series #5 by Dageraad Brewing

Floral, citrusy, and slightly spicy with notes of gin botanicals, lemony hops, spicy phenols, and oak. Gorgeous!

Farmhouse Deux by Engine House No. 9

Notes of papaya, lemon, clove, pepper, and mild funk. Lightly tart and dry.

Double Infinity (Mosaic) by Superflux Beer Company

Really fruity with notes of papaya, mango, tangerine, blueberry, blossoms, grass, and bubblegum.

Hija De Pooh by Cadejo Brewing Company

A light blonde with a floral nose and soft notes of honey on the palate. Finishes slightly dry.

La Galère by Le Corsaire Microbrasserie

They nailed the style, but it’s a boring style. Malty with a floral nose and earthy hop bitterness.

Historical FIGures Porter by Hearthstone Brewery

Rich, roasty dark malt with notes of figs, dates, and a mild hint of maple.

Russian Imperial Stout (2018) by Moody Ales

Notes of chocolate, coffee, and raisins. Good, but I prefer the barrel aged version.

Woke Up Like This by Twin Sails Brewing

Big toasty and roasty notes of coffee, chocolate, and nuts, with a smooth and velvety mouthfeel.

Stoked Winter Ale by Mt. Begbie Brewing Co.

Decent winter warmer with notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and a hint of chocolate.

Terra by Steel & Oak Brewing Co.

Much lighter than I was expecting for a saison with ginger, turmeric, and “spices.” It was nice, but no spicier than a regular saison.

Straight Razor Stout by Riot Brewing Co.

A decent Irish-style stout. Dry with notes of chocolate and nuts. A touch thin.

Odin’s Gift by Odin Brewing Company

Lots of caramel malt with a touch of berry fruitiness and some earthy bitterness.

Batch 15 IPA by Aslan Brewing Company

Super juicy for a NW IPA. Cloudy and smooth with notes of tropical fruit, citrus, and pine.

Backbone Stout by Boneyard Beer Company at Smiths Pub

Rich and creamy with with tons of chocolate and coffee/espresso flavour.

Dank IPA by pFriem Family Brewers at Smiths Pub

Floral and dank nose with lots of tropical fruit and sweet malt on the palate. Moderately bitter.
