June 27: CAMRA Victoria – Bring a New Member Event

Swans, Victoria BC; 19:00–21:00

CAMRA – Victoria’s Annual “Bring a New Member Night” will be held in the Penthouse at Swan’s Brewpub.

Appetizers will be served, but we are recommending that everyone plan to have a meal either before or afterwards as the appetizers usually go very quickly.

Swan’s is having a couple happy hours sandwiched around the event, with the first running from 3-6pm featuring $4.95 items with the purchase of a drink, and the other from 9-11pm featuring $8 burgers with purchase of a drink.

We are also asking that members contribute a small donation towards the beer served to help offset the cost to purchase it, as this is usually one of our most expensive events to run.

Also, we are asking all members to please bring your membership cards with you. If you are a new or renewed member and haven’t received your card by the time of the event, please see our membership director Cayla there as she may have it with her.

And as always, please plan for a safe ride to and from the event.

Cheers, and we hope to see you there!

May 16: Battle of the ‘Burbs – Dageraad vs. Steel & Oak

Wildebeest, Vancouver BC; 19:00–22:00

It’s almost summertime and Wildebeest is welcoming in the season with another exciting edition of their outstanding beer dinners for your eating & drinking pleasure! On this occasion we’ll be showcasing two of our favorite breweries from outside the city – Dageraad from Burnaby and Steel & Oak from New Westminster. Both breweries have secured their spot among the top brewing talent in British Columbia and we aim to showcase their amazing beer through our carefully selected head-to-head pairings.

Dageraad Brewing defied all logic by brewing only Belgian-style beers. Other breweries have tried, with varying degrees of success, to produce these styles of beer in individual batches, but no one expected that a brewery in BC could focus exclusively on Belgian beer and be successful. While the brewery may be a bit out of the way for some, it is indeed a hidden gem, well worth the train or bus ride out to Burnaby for their beer. Dageraad is singular in Vancouver, with no other brewery coming close to creating these styles with such quality, consistency, and attention to detail.

Steel & Oak Brewing Co. embodies the modernness of today while remaining dedicated to the craftsmanship of years long past. Materials of strength and durability, steel and oak; house protect and nurture what we stand for most – exceptional tasting craft beer. Using a mixture of North American, English and German brewing styles, techniques and ingredients, Steel & Oak explores new beer styles while constantly refining and perfecting the classics. Always unfiltered, unpasteurized and made with the finest ingredients, Steel & Oak proudly returns the noble tradition of brewing quality beer to New Westminster.

Tickets are $85 including tax and gratuity.

May 18: La Ducasse & Life Drawing

Strange Fellows Brewing, Vancouver BC; 19:00–22:00

Strange Day #29

Think you can’t DRAW to save your LIFE? Face your fear (of drawing) and join us for an evening of LIFE DRAWING.

La Ducasse de Mons’ yearly re-enactment of the battle of St. George and the Dragon celebrates the triumph of bravery over fear. Even if you think that you can’t draw, take inspiration from St George, and join us on Thursday May 18th, when we’ll celebrate bravery with an evening of judgement-free LIFE DRAWING.

La Ducasse: The good luck charms of some are small enough to fit in a pocket or wear around the neck. Other charms are bigger, like the one that characterizes the tiny village of Mons, Belgium. Each year, the townsfolk re-enact the notorious battle between good & evil, with St George astride his horse, valiantly battling the Dragon. First performed in 1349 to cure the village of the Black Death, this charm obviously works, as the town has not suffered from the Plague since.

$12 – for a beer and a Life Drawing Session* with a live model. Materials and instruction provided. You bring your courage to try something new. *Life Drawing Sessions are 1 hour: 7-8pm, or 8-9pm. All artistic abilities welcome. Please RVSP.

Many thanks to OPUS Art Supplies for their generous donation of materials.
