Last Week’s Craft Beer Tasting Notes—Nov 27–Dec 3 (36 Beers)

My girlfriend came back from a month-long trip to visit her family in El Salvador, so we had some drinking to catch up on. There were about another 30 beers sampled at the Christmas Craft Beer Show, but I didn’t take notes on those.

Bottles & Cans

IMG_20171203_194742

Palate Wrecker by Green Flash Brewing Company

Big notes of pine and citrus over a bready malt base. Lots of earthy bitterness that lingers.

Barrel Aged Belgian Tripel by Ravens Brewing Company

Definite notes of dark fruit and spices but only a touch of oak. It finished much too sweet.

Craft Made Pilsner by Phillips Brewing Company

Pretty standard North American pils. Slightly floral nose, touch of corn on the palate, and a crisp body.

Trainwreck (2017) by Phillips Brewing Company

Really good this year. Smooth and rich with notes of vanilla, currants, bourbon, and oak.

Trainwreck Barley Wine (2016) by Phillips Brewing Company

Aged one year. Not as much bourbon character as 2017. Glad they went back to barrels.

Accusation Ale by Phillips Brewing Company

Nice example of the ESB style. Very malt-forward and light with a touch of bitterness in the finish.

Jitter Buzz by Central City Brewers + Distillers

Decent coffee stout with some roasty malt and espresso flavour. A little thin though.

Piñata Squamata by Parallel 49 Brewing Company

Really nice notes of pineapple and coconut in this Piña colada milkshake IPA. The lactose got a little chunky after settling, but rolling the bottle helped.

Sumo In A Sidecar by Evil Twin Brewing

IMG_20171130_220255

This is a really weird idea for a beer—an apricot and umami IPA. The apricot came through but the umami made it taste a little off.

Levadura by Stillwater Artisanal

This was a really refreshing gose with notes of agave and lime plus a touch of salt.

Mexi-Gose by Odin Brewing Company

Another lightly tart Gose with notes of lime and sea salt.

Gose To Hollywood by To Øl

Really nice Gose with a touch of tropical fruit and salt. Refreshing and smooth.

G&T Gose by Anderson Valley Brewing Company

IMG_20171129_172549

Really refreshing with notes of lemon, lime, juniper, and salt.

Pêche Mel Scaldis by Brasserie Dubuisson

Loads of fresh peach flavour with a touch of spice from the yeast. It also had hints of brandy.

Anxiety Ale (2017) by Phillips Brewing Company

Fruity esters and spicy phenols from the Belgian yeast complemented by a touch of sweetness and mild flavour from the added beetroots. I’m really glad they brought back the beets for this year’s version.

Gary’s Chocolate Orange by Central City Brewers + Distillers

Whistler Winter Dunkel this ain’t. Nothing on the nose, but hints of orange peel and bitter chocolate on the palate.

SeaQuench Ale by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

20171130_193354

Really thirst-quenching with tons of lime, black pepper, and sea salt. Finished really dry. Mix of three different styles that comes off like a saison.

Mera Belga by Cadejo Brewing Company

My girlfriend brought me this back from El Salvador. Not a bad Belgian Wit. It had a nice wheaty body with a touch of honey, vanilla, and zesty citrus.

Prescription Porter by Barkerville Brewing Co.

A nice chocolate porter with a mild touch of chili heat. Not sure if the chaga mushrooms added much though and the body was a little thin.

Blackberry Wheat (Sour Series) by Townsite Brewing

20171203_182620

Really nice blackberry flavour over a grainy malt base. Just the right level of tartness and the wheat offsets the sweetness.

Space Armadillo by Twin Sails Brewing

This Sacc trois IPA was really juicy with notes of mango, pineapple, citrus and a touch of light funk. It finished nice and dry. I’ve missed this beer.

Woke Up Like This by Twin Sails Brewing

Big toasty and roasty notes of coffee, chocolate, and nuts, with a smooth and velvety mouthfeel.

Arcade Glow by Boombox Brewing Company20171202_200117

Pineapple, stone fruits, berries, lemon. This so amazingly juicy and smooth.

Juxtapose by Four Winds Brewing

Nice subtle funkiness to compliment the tropical fruit notes from the hops and the yeast esters.

Blackberry Jam by Four Winds Brewing

The blackberries in this fruited IPA balanced really nicely against the lupulin. The lactose and vanilla added a touch of sweetness and it finished oh so smoothly.IMG_20171201_143040

Home Ec by Twin Sails Brewing

This Tirimisu stout had notes of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, cookies, and cream. It was sweet and decadent. Phenomenal!

2×4 DIPA by Melvin Brewing

Incredibly hop-forward with notes of pine, citrus, and tropical fruit over a light malt base. Lingering grassy bitterness.

Honorary non-Craft Mentnion

Pilsener of El Salvador by Industrias La Constancia

The national beer of El Salvador. Crisp body with a touch of corn. Not mind-blowing, but way better than Corona.

Green Flash Tap takeover at Smiths Pub

West Coast IPA by Green Flash Brewing Company

20171202_210547

Floral nose, with tropical fruit, citrus, and pine on the palate. Nice bitter finish.

Le Freak by Green Flash Brewing Company

A nice hoppy triple with citrusy hops and spicy phenols.

Imperial IPA by Green Flash Brewing Company

Piney resin, a touch of tropical fruit and grapefruit, and a boatload of dankness.

Soul Style by Green Flash Brewing Company

A nicely balanced IPA with a tropical fruit nose accompanied by citrus notes and biscuit malt.

Tangerine Soul Style IPA by Green Flash Brewing Company

Really nicely expressed tangerine to complement the hops. Nice and juicy.

20171202_210558

Passion Fruit Kicker by Green Flash Brewing Company

Slight citric acidity with notes of passion fruit and a hint of tea with a rich mouthfeel and a dry finish.

Ideal Belgique by Green Flash Brewing Company

Beautiful roasty malt, with fruity esters, spicy phenols and hops, and brown sugar. Rich and decadent.

Divine Belgique by Green Flash Brewing Company

Fruity esters and spicy phenols complemented by zesty European hops over a rich pale malt base.

Last Week’s Craft Beer Tasting Notes—Oct 30–Nov 5 (39 beers)

I think these are all from last week. Some might be from before Portland. I don’t know. It’s a blur! Sorry they’re a bit brief, but that’s a lot of beers!

Stone Enjoy By 10.31.17 IPA by Stone Brewing

Drunk before the expiry, this IPA was fresh and delicious with notes of citrus, tropical fruit, pine, and dank.

What Rough Beast by Breakside Brewery

Hazy and juicy with notes of citrus and tropical fruit over a biscuity malt base. Smooth and crushable.

Flat Earth Theory by Urban Family Brewing

Sour and funky with notes of berries, oak, and a slight vinous quality.

Fear of Ghosts by Stillwater Artisanal

Moderately tart, with mild spice, dry wheatiness, and the faintest hint of smoke.

Fresh Hop Wild Ale by Four Winds Brewing

Herbal nose with notes of melon and lime on the palate. Slightly tart. I was hoping for more hop presence.

Imperial Stout by Lagunitas Brewing Company

Rich roasty flavours with a touch of smoke. Notes or coffee and chocolate with a sweet finish.

Victory at Sea by Ballast Point Brewing Company

Strong coffee nose with the roasty notes balanced by sweetness from the vanilla.

Barrelholder Belgian Golden Strong (2017) by Category 12 Brewing

Caramel, vanilla, clove, and oak. Nice alcohol warmth, but the sweetness is a little much. Hopefully it ages well.

Gose by Reuben’s Brews

Lightly tart with notes of lemon, lime, and coriander. Slightly salty and very refreshing.

Cellar Door by Stillwater Artisanal

Herbal and grassy nose with a dry wheaty body accompanied by herbal and tangerine notes, followed by spicy, and earthy bitterness.

Green Zebra by Founders Brewing Co.

A nice and refreshing Gose with subtle hints of watermelon and sea salt.

Zombie Hopocalypse by Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks

Herbal nose with light grapefruit and vegetal flavours over a grainy malt base.

Even More Coco Jesus by Evil Twin Brewing

Roasty malt flavours of dark chcoffee and coffee, complemented by sweet coconut and maple syrup. Well balanced and smooth.

New England IPA by Epic Brewing Co. (Utah, Colorado)

Hazy and smooth with juicy citrus notes. I felt like it could do with a bit more tropical fruit though.

Breaking Bud by Knee Deep Brewing Company

Aromas and of tropical fruit and marijuana. Smooth mouthfeel with a crisp body and light bitterness.

The Cloud by Stillwater Artisanal

Notes of tropical fruits, citrus, and grass. Slightly hazy with a smooth mouthfeel and light bitterness in the finish.

Stone Mocha IPA by Stone Brewing

A great mashup of styles with a hoppy nose and notes of coffee and chocolate on the palate.

Ice by Modern Times Beer

Really crisp and a little spicy. A very refreshing summer beer Shame it didn’t hit Canada till fall.

Wizard Mode by Boombox Brewing Company

Juicy tropical fruit and citrus notes with a smooth mouthfeel and low bitterness. Delicious.

Rad Seeker by Boombox Brewing Company

Tropical hop aromas and flavours of mango, guava, and papaya. Smooth and juicy body with low bitterness. Amazing NE IPA!

¡Viva La Beaver! by Belching Beaver Brewery

Full-bodied and decadent with rich notes of peanut butter and milk chocolate. Just the right level of sweetness with a smooth mouthfeel.

Cashmere Fresh Hopped Farmhouse Ale by Main Street Brewing Company

Slightly tart and spicey with hints of peach, melon, and coconut.

Barrel-Aged Brett Saison by Gladstone Brewing Company

Amazing beer, but shouldn’t have had it alongside Four Winds’ Operis. Subtle brett notes, tartness, and fruitiness.

Operis – Brett Saison by Four Winds Brewing

2017 batch that was sold half price in the tasting room due to high protein levels. Lot of sediment, but it still tasted amazing!

Fresh Hop Sartori Sour IPA (2017) by Field House Brewing Co.

Tart and puckering, but there’s little to no fresh hop character.

Double Infinity (Galaxy) by Superflux Beer Company

Good god! One of the best DIPAs I’ve ever had. Notes of passionfruit and citrus over a rich malt base. Smooth and delicious!

Fortunello by Four Winds Brewing

This was really interesting. Both herbaceous and citrusy. I also got a little mint and lavender on the nose.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) by Founders Brewing Co.

Boozy AF. Rich notes of coffee, chocolate, and bourbon.

Houblon Chouffe by Brasserie d’Achouffe

A fantastic Belgian IPA. The fruitiness of the hops really complemented the esters and phenols from the Belgian yeast.

Stone Xocoveza by Stone Brewing

Rich and delicious with notes of coffee, chocolate, chilli, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Beltane 2017 by Propolis Brewing

Slightly tart and funky. Very floral and herbaceous with a hint of horse blanket on the nose.

Limb From Limb Rye PA by Driftwood Brewery

Very fruity, with lots of melon flavour. Hints of clove and spice, but missing that rye dryness. Finishes rather sweet.

Googly Eyes by Wander Brewing

Hazy, juicy, and smooth with tons of tropical fruit and citrus hop notes.

Mosaic Black IPA by Mikkeller

Sadly, I think this can was old, because it was grassy AF.

Shploing!! by Omnipollo

A smores IPA. You definitely get the crackers and vanilla, but the mashmellow is too subtle and shouldn’t it have chocolate?

Salted Black Porter by Field House Brewing Co.

Rich and smooth. Like drinking a liquid salted caramel.

Blackmail Milk Stout by Strange Fellows Brewing

Creamy and roasty with notes of coffee and chocolate. Smooth and not too sweet.

Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin by New Belgium Brewing Company

Probably one of the better pumpkin beers I’ve had this year. Lots of pumpkin flavour and tons of spice.

Surrounded By Idiots by Parallel 49 Brewing Company

Mildly tart with jammy berry flavours and a touch of oak. Something is missing though.
